Orlando R.O.C.K. Launch, April 5, 2014

Before a last minute show Saturday night I had some time to squeeze in five flights. It's warming up with light 5 mph winds.

First up was my new Quest X-15 built from the available parts pack. (This model is an upcoming blog build.)
For better stability, the body tube was lengthened 2" and .25 oz. of clay weight added to the nose cone.
Flight was arrow straight with an Estes B6-4 to an estimated 350'.
With no damage at recovery the day was off to a good start!

My Red River Rocketry STARLINER finally had a chance to fly with something larger than an A engine.
An Estes B6-4 got it to a surprising altitude for a conical stability model. I would guess it capped out close to 400'.
The eight sided Mylar chute brought it down slow, landing behind the line of cars.





Visiting Florida from Ontario, Canada is Chris Hubbard.
He brought the big models, an Estes Interceptor E and Mercury Atlas launched with a D12-5.
Chris also flew his new Quest Stiletto with B6 and C6 engines.





I didn't have a good feeling about this one!
The MPC VOSTOCK had it's first (and last) flight with an Estes C6-3.
In inset picture shows the boost right before it pinwheeled and landed in the grass.
The 20" Mylar parachute did eject while on the ground.
The fins were designed to pop off on a hard landing. One fin broke off, the attachment tabs broken.
Unstable, unstable, unstable!

Noisy, stable with a loud POP at ejection.

The Orlando R.O.C.K. launches are always well run and well attended. Lots of good people and families.
