Centuri Super Kits
Centuri introduced three SUPER KITS in 1976.
These were large models, the main air frame was the ST-14 tubing.
They were designed to be flown with C6-3 and the new C5 "Super C" engines.
Semroc brought back the USS America model but this time it got a 24mm mount for D12 engines.
In 1977 the highly detailed SSV Scorpion kit was added to the lineup.
Lonnie B. found a few finished Super Kits in a Craig's List lot.
There was storage damage, the large wing fins broken at the root edges. He has spent a few hours getting it ready for flight.
I had never seen this Super Kit up close. It's surprising how large and detailed it is.
Some of the antennas were broken and lost. That antenna tube is 2" in diameter.
Centuri used thick card stock on many of it's more detailed models.
The middle of the wing has a hollow recess with more layered detail pieces laminated on top of that!
This is definitely one of the more detailed Centuri offerings. The black and white newspaper catalogs don't do the model justice.
I won an SSV Scorpion in an Ebay auction about ten years ago. Poor thing was trashed, with fins torn off and details flapping. There was no saving it, but I got it flightworthy with a lot of CA and wood glue. I was able to put it up for one final flight before scavenging the nose cone and coupler for a UFO Invader clone
ReplyDeleteHi Wallyum,
DeleteLonnie's SSV Scorpion was in very rough shape when he got it. The wings were pretty much broken off. I understand he is still working on it for flight.
I was at the '77 HIAA Trade show where the Scorpion first appeared. All those "antennas" are actually "spacecraft" that the Scorpion picks up in orbit for servicing (or whatever) in orbit. When they are ready to go, they are moved from their external parking spots and "launched" on the rail that follows the curve of the "Scorpion Tail" like a catapult.
ReplyDeleteThanks John,
DeleteI appreciate the back story! Most all "fantasy" kits had some sort of history. It was always fun to read the catalog copy.
Your Accur8 website is great! I especially like your work on the Mercury Redstones.
