Oh No - More Paint Picks

In a post from September 15,
I talked about success using the Ace Hardware Premium Enamel spray paint.

Here's my experience from that post:
The Ace GLOSS WHITE doesn't dry quite as shiny as the Rusto 2X. (See next paragraph)
The Ace LIGHT GRAY dries smooth and glossy.
The Ace GLOSS YELLOW dries smooth, not as shiny as the Rusto 2X
The Ace GLOSS BLACK dries very shiny and smooth. Much better finish than the Rusto 2X

New cans of the Ace brand Gloss White have dried with a flat finish. I can't recommend the Ace Gloss White. Who knows, they may have changed the formulation.
I refuse to go back to using the Rusto 2X gloss white, it's too much of a risk. The Rusto 2X gloss white can shoot out rough, what I've called a "cottage cheese" finish. I think the white pigment settles at the bottom and in the feed straw, that's what shoots out first. You can shake the Rusto can all you want, you still run the risk of a rough finish.

More recently I've had very good results with the Gloss White Rustoleum High Performance Enamel. It dries faster than the Rusto 2X white, dry to the touch in about 20 minutes. The gloss is very shiny. Look for the larger, chrome wrap can.

I've mentioned before, I hate to give spray paint recommendations. So far, the Ace brand paint (other than the gloss white) has been more reliable than the Rusto 2X. Ace has a better nozzle, and good opaque coverage and a great shine.

  1. Not to muddy the waters too much, but I bought a can of the ACE gloss black, and it's anything but gloss. The can I bought is somewhere around a satin finish. The result is far more consistent than Rusto, but not the finish I was looking for.

    1. Hi Metal,
I regret making any recommendations on paint! They must have changed their formulations. Very frustrating. A friend gave me an off brand of gray spray paint once. It was great paint. I mail ordered six cans of gloss white and six cans of gloss black - they were crap!

    2. Yeah, it seems like companies are changing formulas all the time. It can get very frustrating. Right now, I'm having good luck when Rusto 2x white, but not black.

    3. Hi Metal,
The yellow and orange Rusto 2X colors seem to be good. The red and black spatter on me. I find small raised bits of paint in the surface.

  2. Chris,
Like you I have tried different spray paints and get frustrated with inconsistencies among spray cans. Since I spend a pretty good penny on my vintage builds, I decided to go back to old formula Krylon. Unfortunately I can only order it online under its new name ACRYLI-QUIK™ Acrylic Lacquer, it is their industrial line. It is the same old Krylon we used to use back in the day.

    1. Hi Scigs,
I've read about your Krylon success use on the forums. I'm curious to try it, but don't want to do a bulk buy. On the blog I try to use paints that are available to most builders at their local hardware store.
I'm continuing to have very good results with the ACE Premium enamels, except for the Gloss White.

  3. Chris, Have you tried the original Rustoleum Rust Stop line of gloss white paint?

    1. Hi Scigs,
I believe the Rusto Rust Stop line is their original brand. I have used it, but that was years ago. I seem to remember it took a long time to dry. I might be wrong on that.
One reason I'm trying out the Ace Premium brand paints is the fast, workable drying times. You still have to follow the re-coat times listed on the cans, but you can sand down that first coat faster. The spray nozzles are like the more expensive Duplicolor style.
