Quest Superbird Build, Finished

I didn't do a blog build on the Quest Superbird. It's a good size 3FNC or three fin - nose cone rocket.
These pictures are of the finished show build for Quest.

The body tube is 35mm diameter, close to a BT-55 size.
The balsa fins are 1/8" thick! Most kits this size size include 3/32" thick balsa.

There are two 14" parachutes, one parachute for the lower body, a second for the large payload section.

This kit has peel and stick décor, including this three color body tube wrap.

The thin white band is actually the coupler that joins the two body tube sections.

The nose cone plastic was a bit lighter than the color of the upper red body tube.
I sprayed both the body tube and nose cone with the same tint red paint to have them match.

  1. I almost picked up a Superbird until I saw the announcement from Quest that they’re bringing back the Icarus - I like the fin shape and blue graphics better. Nice, clean looking build Chris, did you have any problems with centering rings fitting properly? The Quest kits I’ve built have been basically solid with some quirky parts at times.

    1. Hi Openroad,
I'll be assembling a revised Icarus for Quest soon, with the 24mm engine mount.
The centering rings were loose. I send along build notes. Responses from Quest: They are listening and could be making adjustments for better fit of some older parts.

  2. Hi, Chris,
Nice build. This model looks very similar to the Quest Icarus in terms of size and configuration. I've got an Icarus in the build pile. Just might have to break it out and build it. The Icarus kit nose is currently sitting on a Quest Big Rage. I somehow lost the BR 'Nike' nose cone a couple years ago. Need to order another from Quest....

    1. Hi Ed,
They are nearly the same model - the Superbird is 1/2" taller than the Icarus. The fin shape on the Icarus is more of a trapezoid shape. Both are the same 35mm diameter and have dual chutes.
The new Icarus will have a 24mm engine mount for the new 24mm Q-Jets.
