Do the top curve keeping the height consistent from side to side.
Sand the front angle using 400 grit on a block.
Sand the side and back angles in.
Here's a finished hatch piece ready for filler.
I'd recommend filling the balsa grain before gluing unto the model.
Do you use CWF for pieces like that? I would think they'd warp if you only apply to the outside surfaces.

DeleteI did use one pass of CWF then sanding. The used filler/primer and sanding. No warping at all after the CWF was applied on the one side.
