A long, but rewarding build.
Not my best work, but certainly better than my first Estes Little Joe build in the mid 1970s.
One day soon I'll have the courage to fly it. For now, it's a display model.
I didn't cover the gluing of the escape nozzles. I made a small pool of thick CA. The back end of the nozzle was dipped in the CA and set in position with tweezers.
Great build thread. Its too bad Estes and Semroc used the wrong tower lattice for the 1/70 scale Little Joe II. QTV didn't have the central ring and "V" struts...it would really simplify the build if they'd provided the option to build the tower lattice either for QTV or the version flown atop all the other Apollo capsules.
ReplyDeleteHi Aeromoe,
DeleteWho knows why Estes made that tower decision in the late 1960s. Maybe they just settled for the same tower used on the 1/70 Saturn 1B kit?
Beautiful job Chris! I wish I knew about this build blog before I ever started on mine!! I,ve made a mess out of it for the most part...I AM going to go to balsa fins for the same reason you did....I,ve come close a number of times to throwing mine in the trash, but im going to press on and hope that prep and paint will hide at least most of my screw ups! I know that before I start on a project like this again, I will try to confer with you based on your master modeling skills!
ReplyDeleteThanks Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteIt all comes down to planning ahead and slowing down when assembling stick towers. I've been tempted to throw away a few builds in my past! I'm no a master modeler, I've just had a lot of experience.
