Some builder have mentioned using common household scissors to cut Kevlar! Household scissors are meant to cut paper and fabric.
Growing up, I can remember hearing may Mother saying: "Where are my good scissors?" They wouldn't remain the "good scissors" for long after cutting a few lengths of Kevlar. Kevlar is said to be five times stronger than steel!
After some effort, you can cut through Kevlar using scissors. But, the end cut could be unraveled and frayed.
For a quick clean cut, buy a wire cutter. Or as shown here - a wire sidecutter.
I have a pair of small, low-buck wire cutters from Harbor Freight just for Kevlar, when they get dull a quick pass on my grinder makes the ok for Kevlar again. At a couple bucks a piece when they stop holding an edge they'll get tossed and replaced. Much easier to use than even a good pair of scissors, which the Kevlar inevitably ruins!
ReplyDeleteHi Openroad,
DeleteAgreed! I have a few useable (later disposable) Harbor Freight tools. One of the best HF tool buys was my set of small diamond files.
There are scissors made just for cutting Kevlar. Readily available on that jungly shopping site. Work great.
