Estes Solar Warrior (#3225) Build, Finished

This should be a favorite with D12-5 engines.
Big with big decals. I'm a little surprised they weren't more popular and ended up part of the closeout sale.

The second build was painted Metallic Red on the upper body. With this half-half decor most any other color could have worked. Orange, yellow, green or silver could have been used.

  1. Lovely work as always, makes me want to build another. One day I might build an upscale of this one. Also agree that it should have been more popular, it is fun to build, has a unique look to it, and flies great. Would like to see pics of your metallic red model too...

    1. Hi Neil,
It was too good a deal when they were on clearance, I got two. For me, BT-60 models with a 24mm mount are a favorite size. BT-60 is a very strong tube and two foot tall models get good altitude on a D engine.
I'll take some side by side pictures when I get the decals on the metallic red one.

    1. Hi Moontana,
I'll probably sell this one with the purple upper end on Ebay.

  3. Congratulations, nice job as always. Reminds me of the Custom Rockets Solar Explorer, only much larger. Love those waterslide decals. Applied some peel and stick decals the other day on a Gemini DC build. It's a small diameter rocket and within five minutes the edges had lifted up on the body. Applying clear coat would have been useless, the edges would lift again before the coat was dry. Pulled off the decals, transferred onto white paper, and scanned into my computer. Will home print a set of waterslide decals. Maybe a good thing, since only enough decals supplied to cover one side of the rocket ( one name decal, four fin face decals). This way I can print two sets. Keep on rock(ateer)in'!

    1. Hi BAR,
Thanks! I have the Custom Solar Explorer. The Solar Explorer is BT-50 based and as with all my BT-50 rockets it developed a crimp in the body tube above the engine mount.
I hate peel and stick decals. Those should only be included in RTF and ARTF rockets. Some of the stickers on the RTF rockets were stuck on in China. I've seen some that are crooked, wrinkled and peeling off before the first flight!
Some think water slide decals are to tough for kids to apply. I was setting down water slides when I was five years old on plastic models. They may not have been on straight but I learned through experience how to position them.

  4. Nice Work! Side by side do you like the red or purple paint better?

    1. Hi Scott,
I like them both! But I am a little more partial to the metallic red. After I get the decals on the red one, I'll post a side-by-side picture.

  5. Beautiful work!

For whatever reason, I didn't jump on the Solar Warrior when it was on clearance. Maybe I didn't see in online pictures how cool it really was, or maybe I thought I'd get one later (not realizing that the Specials page is often full of clearance stock).

Seeing them on the field, though, they're really impressive looking. I too love those BT-60 rockets. Good size, great fliers. Big but not so much you can't fit a few in the car.

    Good stuff as always, Chris!
