Estes just released a Mini Goblin kit and t-shirt.

For any of the "older" design purists out there -
The "3" should be flipped on it's back so it looks like a stylized bat.

Check out the original instructions at Jim Z's: CLICK HERE

If the model were standing upright the 3 is flipped 90 degrees on it's right side.

I'm being picky. Still, an interesting original design tweak.

  1. From what I can see on the catalogs archived at the ninfinger site (https://www.ninfinger.org/), the Astron Goblin is displayed with the "3" fin visible (but the cartoon goblin not), and the baseline of the fin markings appear to be aligned with the trailing edge or mid-chord line (an imaginary line that connects the middle of the fin base edge to the middle of the fin tip edge), resulting in an "off-kilter" appearance. When rocket is vertical the 3 is upright (but tilted).
In the 1973-1982 catalog the "Astron" part of the name gets dropped, and the rocket is now shown with the "3" fin toward the back, and the cartoon goblin now visible. There isn't much of the "3" visible, but the position of the very small bit (roughly centered along the fin span -- seems to suggest the '3" upright and tilted baseline aligned with the fin trailing edge or mid-chord line).
The Goblin stops being listed starting with the 1983 catalog, until it gets introduced well within the 20xx (I don't remember what year it re-appeared).

  2. Basically what I'm getting at is the catalog image and the instructions seem to disagree with respect to the markings.
The instruction scans on the JimZ site has an illustration that shows the "3" in the orientation you describe --- "lazy" (i.e. on its back) when rocket is vertical. However the inset picture (on facing page) shows the rocket w/o a "3" marking. Likewise the scan of the face card shows rocket w/o the "3" marking. The viewing angle of the inset photo and the face card image are (mostly) in the same as the illustration in the instruction (though the illustration shows launch lugs between the "goblin" lettering and the "3", but the inset photo and face card shows it between the fin with "goblin" lettering and the black fin).

  3. On a side note with regards to markings/emblem... Note the orientation of the American flag on the starboard side of the fuselage on the Space Shuttle Orbiter.

  4. IMHO, I always thought that was a 'bat' with wingtips, not a numeral '3' on it's back.
