That looks great! It's too bad you drained the ink, I would have liked to see your ideads on perhaps maximizing the ink in the pen so functioned as a working pen & rocket.
I would think just cutting the ink cartridge so it would fit in above the upper dowel. Drain a drop or two of ink and then cap with some putty and CA glue. Thus you may have about 1" of ink in the upper portion for writing.
I've actually seen new pens with mini ink cartridge - forcing you to purchase a refill in short order, but I don't see those for sale...
