This is the nozzle on a bottle of school glue. I wouldn't recommend the water soluble school glue for model rocket building.
Replace the wide applicator nozzle on your wood glue bottle with this orange, fine point nozzle for more control of the glue flow.
Unscrew the nozzle at the white collar, wash out any school glue and replace the wood glue nozzle. It will fit the threads on the wood glue bottle.
Indeed, glue sticks are quite handy, especially for paper and light cardstock. Pretty much a go-to for paper modelling. They've got much less moisture than regular white glue, so you can avoid the puckering problem due to the moisture causing the paper to swell. Downside is of course that it doesn't penetrate the material as deeply, so the bond might not be as strong. The color-change type (goes on purple, dries clear) is also nice as it's easier to see where you're applying the glue.
ReplyDeleteOne handy technique when using glue stick is using another piece of paper over your part to act as a mask -- just place the paper so that it covers the part and exposing only the area where you want the glue to go -- you can now rub the glue stick and get better coverage w/o getting glue in the area where you don't want it.
Hi Naoto,
DeleteLike you mention, glue sticks aren't as "wet". I see some on the forums using bottled wood glue to paper fins. It can over-wet the paper and get things soggy.
I like your paper overlay idea!
Getting back on the back-to-school sales -- indeed this is the time to stock up on various supplies, as you can get multi-packs of stuff for about the same price (if not for less) than you'd pay for individual items.
ReplyDeleteOther items to possibly consider include pencil sharpeners -- which could come in handy in making point on end of wood dowels.
One school supply item that's easy to overlook are pencil cases -- they come in handy as tool storage. Especially useful if you want to carry around some tools if you want to build models while you're on-the-go. Also something that could be worthwhile is to check into school supplies you can find at Asian-centric (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Korean) stores -- as you're apt to find a greater variety of these things.
Hi Naoto,
DeleteI should have included pencil sharpeners in the post.
Small pencil cases would work well. I've got a pill bottle I use for igniter storage in the range box.
I had a clear plastic case I loaded up with tools when I did some carded models during breaks on the cruise ships.
School Glue has worked well for me for papering fins - the thinner consistency maybe? I need a new bottle and this is definitely a good time buy one, thanks for the reminder Chris!
ReplyDeleteHi Openroad,
DeleteI don't usually use school glue. Like you mentioned, it's pretty thin. Maybe that's the trick?
I wrote that the nozzle on a cheap bottle of school glue could be transferred onto and instead of that wide tip wood glue nozzle for a more controlled flow.
