Friction fitting a rocket motor is never easy.
I've got better at it over the years, here's another idea.
Try rolling the tape end over the top edge of the motor tube.
If the tape edge wrap is below the top, it can roll over on itself with the sticky side against the inside of the motor mount tube.
Don't cover the top of the motor, the top should be open for the ejection charge to easily blow through. Just roll it over the lip edge and trim.
