The very tip of the nose cone is painted silver.
Before you can mask and spray, the raised paint line between the two colors should be lightly sanded otherwise it will show through the final color.
After checking the length of the mask, some marked Scotch tape was cut on my window.
Cut a smooth arc. It might take a few tries to get something close to the fit the nose cone tip.
I will be using the nose cone sticker provided with the kit. All other stickers were re-drawn and printed up on water slide decal paper.
To double check the tip mask position, I traced the cockpit window onto some copy paper and set it down the nose cone.
On the left is the curved Scotch tape mask.
On the right is the masking tape and paper wrap overlay. Just the very tip will get a shot of metallic silver paint.
Chris,
ReplyDeleteYou probably already know this, but there is an old Estes template for cardstock paper shrouds here:
http://www.plans.rocketshoppe.com/decals/est-ta-1_Paper_Shroud.pdf
Comes in handy for making not only paper shrouds and transitions, but thin curved masks for painting nose cones. If you extend the left and right edge lines down to a point, you can use a compass to draw arcs of any size, not just the standard bt tube sizes. I've used this for some scratch/custom builds with good results. Cheers.
Hi BAR,
DeleteI am aware of the card stock shroud templates and have used them in the past. I also use the shroud/transition tool on payloadbay.com. I haven't thought about using those for masking though! I'll have to give that a try when the need comes up again.
