Estes Saros, K-54 Build, Fin Can Build, Part 7, Fin Shaping
I went with 3/32" basswood for the fins. To make a fin template the instruction drawings were dropped into Corel draw and the body tube enlarged to almost 1" wide, the diameter of a BT-50 tube.
The outside edge got a wipe of CA glue to seal it.
The sealed edge got a quick hit with a Sharpie. The dried CA glue didn't let the ink soak into the wood.
The blackened edge lets you visually check the fin thickness when sanding with a block.
After the fins were tapered the black ink is sanded off with a block. If you sealed the edges with CA glue, the ink should be completely removed with light sanding.
