New Way Firecat 4 Build, Background

The Estes Firecat was available from 1982 - 1984. This design shouldn't be confused with an earlier "Firecat" design, offered only to members of the Estes Aerospace Club.
The big features were the up swept fins and bulbous nose cone. Strange - this rocket was 15" long and used streamer recovery.
Who knows where these colors came from. I'm not a big fan or the green, blue and yellow decor.

That PNC-102 nose cone had a history. It first showed up on the Centuri Sky-Lab model in 1972.
In 1980 it was used again in the Buck Rogers Laser Lance. To see the catalog page: CLICK HERE

You can still buy a reproduction PNC-102 plastic nose cone through Sirius Rocketry and Moldin' Oldies - CLICK HERE

I'll be doing something closer to this color combination on the New Way Firecat face card - red, black and white.

(Sorry for the flipped image, it fits better horizontally.)

  1. That original Estes Firecat in military colors looks like an anti tank RPG. The nose cone in balsa is still available at erockets for an ST-10 tube. I agree, the red, white, and black color scheme and black decals looks much better than the original.
I like the New Way kits: They are unique, slightly odd, and they include many small extras. They have a little packet that includes sandpaper, an emery board, and sometimes even a length of heat shrink tubing to put over the Kevlar near the motor tube. And most of them have a cardstock ruler and launch lug marking guide. All fun builds.
Only thing about the square tubes though, is some of them have nicely overlapping seams, while some of them have deep spirals. Cheers.

    1. Hi BAR,
I'll be getting into all the parts (the sandpaper pack) in the next post.
The square tubes do have a overlap seam, I haven't seen any with open spirals.
