Estes Solar Sailer II, Kit # 2044, Finished

The fin decals are evenly spaced down the leading edge of the lower fins, a little away for the dowel line.

The girder decals visually break up the center truss fins.

The name decal is centered in the open white space under the red mask line.
The tube wrap decal line sets over the paint mask line.

The upper end is gloss red, a bit plain.
Recovery will be a 15" chrome Mylar chute. The Solar Sailer II had a 18" chrome cute. That seemed a little large.

  1. That's a really sharp-looking rocket. Do we know who designed it?

I have pondered doing an upscale of this one. There aren't that many rockets this nice looking with such an easy mask. The plain red front end doesn't bother me because there is so much great detail in the white half of the rocket.

    1. Thanks Neil,
I don't know who designed this one. I used to find designer names on the old Semroc website, but that is gone now.
I thought there should be a cockpit window decal on the nose cone to add some interest to the top end.

    2. I really wish companies (especially Estes) were more forthcoming about who the designers are for each rocket. They should get appropriate credit and/or recognition, for the historical record if nothing else.

  2. For this SS version either BT60 or BT80 makes for a good sized upscale without being too cumbersome. If you go with the 60 then it'll be perfect for Estes 24mm BP motors.

Still wished they'd added a few more decals here like in the 1297.

    1. Hi Mike,
I think an upscale would be great - but I just don't have the room to store them! I agree - the 1297 kit was more detailed with the stepped fins and additional details and decals.

  4. Hrm... I wonder if anybody has gone the opposite direction and make a downscale (for 13mm or MicroMAXX) of this model?

    1. Another interesting idea... 13mm... I even have MMX tubing. But the Nose Cone might be tougher

  5. I am going to make a semi scale. Two point six inch but with non scale length. 38mm MMT but used mostly with 29mm motors. 3D printed NC. Should be about 70 inches long and come in around 36 ounces. Thanks to Chris I have decals I can scale to fit!
