Estes Saturn V Build Part 47 Third Stage Wrap

After spraying, here's what I was left with.
I pulled the tape before the paint had totally set up, maybe 15 minutes after spraying the black.
So far, so good.

There was glitches, a few small bits of black had got underneath the tape. Before the paint sets up, you can usually push the paint back with a knife tip.

Note I said "push" and not scrape.
If you scrape the paint, you run the risk of knocking off some of the white exposing the gray primer underneath. If you do scrape, scrape lightly - just enough to remove some of the black.

Time spent on build: 1:00
Total time on build so far: 46:30

  1. How many coats of the white base did you use, and how many coats of black over that did you use? You mention here that you removed the mask after the black had set up for about 15 minutes - so one coat? Or did you spray two coats within a few minutes of each other?

  2. Typically -
I follow the old Centuri finishing adage of : spray light coats, then a heavier finish coat.
Right now I've been using the 2X Rustoleum Painter's Touch paint from Home Depot with good results. There is a LOT of pigment in this spray paint so I can do fewer coats for coverage. (I did get one bad can that sprayed out clumps of paint) Shake the can really well before spraying and spray when it's warm if possible.
I'll spray a second, third and final (heavier) coat within about 10 minutes of each other.
I wait about 15 minutes before pulling off the masking tape. I've found if I wait too long (after the paint has really dried) I can get tearing and lifts of the mask line area.
Good luck, and it is just that - LUCK! Paint formulations seem to change daily and results can be inconsistant from model to model.
Just about the time you get it figured out, the paint company changes the formula and you are back to square one!

  3. Thanks. I just sprayed my rocket with primer. It looks SO different when it's all one color. I'm very excited about it.

I guess I should put on two coats of primer before putting on a few coats of white.

Do you sand your primer coat(s)?

  4. Yes, you should sand grey primer before shooting the white.
It'll be tough to sand down the gray primer on the Saturn V with all the surface detail. At least rub down the gray primer with a soft cloth to smooth off and polish some of the paint roughness.

The gray primer when dry is a little rough. It's meant to fill any surface imperfections when sanded to surface.
Primer also helps your color coats adhere better.

  5. Oh NO!!! Tragedy!! :( Last night I sprayed the first coat of black onto my masked third stage and realized it wasn't a can of quick drying paint - it was regular enamel paint. So I let it dry overnight and this morning put the second coat on with the same brand (Krylon) black enamel, except this can was quick drying paint.

Now the black stripe looks like hamburger. It's bubbled up due to some reaction between the two paints and looks horrible.

Looks like I might have to fly this one and build another for display.

  6. That's the problem with all the different paint formulations I mentioned earlier.
I've had clearcoats craze the surface of base color paints. The maddening thing is, the base coat and clear coat were the same brand bought on the same day!
