Cheap Target Bag Parachute, DIY, Part 2

Here's the extended circle marks, all are 6" from the center of the middle dot.

Cut out the circle. It's easiest to trace around the circle with a sharp knife.

To mark the sheet for six shroud lines -

Fold the circle in half.
Fold the outsides in into even thirds. Lightly mark the folds with a Sharpie.

I cut three 26" lengths of #10 cotton embroidery thread.
Cutting 26" long lines allows 1" on either side for the loop and knots.

Here's the finished chute, ready to be tied onto the shock cord.

  1. Target bag chutes look great. Wish we had a target locally. I use the Dollar General yellow bags.

    1. Hi Bill,
Most shopping bags will work, but I prefer the red and white printed bags. They are almost the perfect 12" chute size.

  2. Something in my mind registered "I'd seen something like this on a space capsule before"... After a quick Google search, it looks like you've made a parachute that resembles what was used with Soyuz and Shenzou capsules.

    1. Hi Naoto,
The parachutes I designed were a mx of many different NASA and Space X red and white designs. The gore pattern could compliment both sport and scale kits. It's a multi sized, you can make a single 12", or one 15" or one 18" chute from the same print. Available from jonrocket.com, balsamachining.com and in Odd'l Rockets kits.

    2. I was referring to the concentric ring pattern you'd get if you make a parachute from a Target bag. Of the pictures and videos of space capsules and their parachutes, the Soyuz and Shenzou seem to be unique in having that sort of pattern. Most of the time it's something on which typical model rocket parachutes seem to have been based on (i.e. radial sunburst or radial checker pattern).

  3. I use Target bags to carry my lunch because they seem to be heavier and more durable than bags from any other retailer, except maybe Hobby Lobby's larger bags. I tried making a chute from an HL bag once and when I got done, it was so stiff, I wasn't confident in it opening properly. The Target bag on the table next to me is pretty stiff and holds wrinkles effectively.
