As is, it won't fit together. The cut slots (or slits) are too thin to slide together the thick cardstock.
With a sharp knife and straightedge,
The slots were widened.
320 grit sandpaper was folded and the slot sanded until I got a better slip fit.
Plain, but functional.

I must say that I did feel a bit more comfortable with the "cradle" stand from the Estes model than with the "sawhorse" stand included with the plastic model from AMT. The stand for the AMT plastic model had the model sitting much higher off the table surface with a relatively narrow base -- making it relatively easy to knock the model over sideways. If I'm not mistaken the recent reissues of the plastic mode (released by Round 2 Hobby under the AMT name) comes with a wide dome base with metal rod which offers much greater stability (though requires some modification to the model to accept the metal rod).
