With clear tape it's already hard enough to figure out where the end of tape happens to be. Running fingernail lightly around the perimeter to "feel" for the "catch" could be done -- though it often requires you to do it in both directions and often takes more than one try. A tear along the length of the tape makes the problem even more complicated.
Had this problem with a new roll of clear tape. Didn't have a start tab on the end.
