the die-cut balsa still showed some crushed edges. I had to go back for more filler.
The balsa was sheet was pretty good.
Here's a fin right after a shot of filler/primer. You can't see and grain pores.
And a fin after sanding off most of the filler/primer.
The instructions show a sharp corner.
(shrug) The exploded view on the first page of instructions shows rounded outside corner on the tip fins.
ReplyDeleteHi Naoto,
DeleteI wonder if some of the instruction illustrations were based on prototype builds.
That's probably likely -- a similar situation often occurs with computer software and the manuals (which are usually being written concurrently). The screenshots that appear in the manual are from a pre-production prototype of the software (which may differ somewhat from the actual release version).
DeleteSpeaking of which... I did find it interesting how the catalog image of the Klingon Cruiser in the 1975 Estes catalog differed somewhat from the production release (I presume it was a picture of a prototype). This got corrected in the 1976 catalog. The image of the USS Enterprise model is missing that "trough" on the underside of the saucer (where the recovery probe would plug in).
Hi Naoto,
DeleteProbably pre-production pictures and art. In the 1978 catalog, the Star Wars R2D2 art was different than the production kit. Looks like they tried to stabilize it with profile fins then went with clear fin units.
