A Christmas Party Conversation

Once a year I run into Todd at an annual Christmas party. Todd was the head clown with the Ringling Bros. Circus.
I asked: "What is Tom doing these days?" (His friend Tom was also a Ringling Clown)
Todd responded: "He's working for the Lego company making large Lego displays."
Me: "Oh, that's interesting. In all honesty, I never understood all the adult interest in Legos."
Todd: "You're one to talk - Model rocket man."

Touché Todd!

  1. Hi Chris, I confess that as an adult I still enjoy both model rocketry and Legos. Some people don't grow up I guess.

  2. For all us kids who grew up playing with Lego, our childhood nostalgia is a big driver. There is also the desire to pass that love along to our own children.

But have you seen the amount of kits Lego targeted at adults? And how much those kits cost? Lego sells a 7800 piece kit of the Millennium Falcon from Star wars. It's 42 inches long when assembled and costs $800. Definitely not something the average parents will buy for a child.

  3. It's LEGO and rocketry for me, too!
I have a huge stash of LEGO parts, a LEGO blog, and lots of builds displayed in my home. Funny, I never had LEGO as a kid. Didn't get into the bricks until I was 58 years old!

  6. The LEGO metaphor also has use in introduction to computing -- like with programming language Scratch ( https://scratch.mit.edu/ ), where the user "clips" together logic blocks.
Designer Shoji Kawamura has used LEGO to help work out the details of some of the mechanisms of the transforming robots he designed for anime ( https://youtu.be/suCsM0t3jYE ).
