Here's the box!
And, the box sides.
Yep, there's more than one. I'll be building two show models and one flight model for Estes.
This ain't my first Goblin build -
On the left is the Semroc Goblin, BT-55, original size.
The large Goblin was one of the first builds I did when I got back into the hobby in 2009. Its very heavy, has never flown. Heavy wall 2.35" diameter tube, basswood fins, plywood baffle and probably the longest balsa nose cone I've ever used.
TRIVIA: Notice the "3" decals are flipped on their sides (like a stylized bat) and the other decal baselines are parallel to the floor. These decals were set as shown in the original instructions.
I can hear the readers:
"Enough already, get on with the build!"
I knew someone was reading my mind!
ReplyDeleteHas never flown? Now I have something to bug you about.
ReplyDeleteGlad you decided not to stop blogging about your builds. I really enjoy reading about them. Thanks for the hard work documenting your builds.
ReplyDeleteThank you for continuing the blog, Chris! The trivia note got me reviewing my build of an Estes Goblin, and I had gotten the decal orientation wrong, with the "3" facing vertically. That's the kind of fine detail that I really appreciate in your blog. I just got a Great Goblin from Estes, and will get the "3" orientation correct on this one. Oddly, the box graphic has the "3" facing vertically, but your explanation makes a lot of sense. Perhaps I need to get another copy of the original Goblin and redo the decal in the horizontal orientation! It's one of my favorite Estes designs along with the Omega, which uses the same style of nose cone.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to note that the facecard image of the original kit appears to omit the "3" marking. Similarly the photo of the rocket on the instruction sheet appears to be missing the "3" marking.
ReplyDeleteThe rocket as depicted in the catalog is oriented with the fin with the '3" toward the back -- although it does seem the "3" marking is present, there isn't enough of it visible to discern its orientation.
The illustration of the rocket in the instructions depicts the rocket in horizontal orientation (like an aeroplane), with the fin with the "3" positioned like the vertical tail.
The facecard photo and the photo of the rocket on the instructions depict the "GOBLIN" with the baseline projecting perpendicular to the rocket's main axis (i.e. if the rocket is placed vertically, it's level with the ground) -- however in the catalog image, those markings follow the fin sweep. The cartoon goblin appears to be oriented to fit the fin shape.
The decal sheet appears to have some extra bats -- but they don't appear on the instructions nor in the catalog image.
(shrug) Being a sport model, you're afforded a fair amount of leeway in terms of paint and decoration scheme (unless of course you're building it for another party which may have specific requirements -- e.g. Estes).
Hi Naoto,
DeleteThe decal placement history is interesting.
Although I prefer the original decal placement, these are builds for Estes so the decals will be placed as shown in the current instructions.
