New Way Nike Ajax Build, Part 18, Masking For The Olive Drab

The lower BT-55 section is painted flat olive drab.
The mask is at the top of the widest ring at the interstage supports.

I laid tape strips that overhung the edge of the largest ring. I know there is Sharpie ink on the inside of the three tape strips, but the mask/color separation is actually outside of the ring. The clear tape is set flat and overhangs the ring edge.

Tape was wrapped around the low overhang of the interstage supports.
A plastic bag covered the rest of the upper body to remain white.

Here's the finished mask after the tape was removed. I was happy with the results.

  1. Chris,

The olive drab paint you used looks flat in the pic and you stated that the paint was flat as well. What are your plans for the decals, since they will probably show silvering and not adhere well with the flat paint? Do you do gloss olive drab/apply/decals/then flat coat? Or flat olive drab/gloss coat/decals/flat coat? Or the heck with it and just live with the silvering?

And what olive drab paint did you use?

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Augendoc,
I used Tamiya Olive Drab #TS-28.
It actually had a satin finish (low gloss) after it dried. I was concerned about silvering on the decals so I hit the area that would get the white decals with a gloss clear coat acrylic. The white water slide decals went on very well.
After all was dry, I hit the olive drab with a light dusting of dull coat. No silvering.
