Estes Saturn V #1969 Build, Part 21, Cutting Fin Slots
The knife blade easily follows the sides of the molded fin recess slot.
TIP: This high slot plastic is thin. Cut the side lines using a few light cuts with a sharp blade.
TIP: Cut the ends from the corners going in and stop near the center.
Turn over the fairing and cut the other side from the corner in, joining the two cuts.
Look close at the sides if the fin in the slot.
Again, sand the areas where the fin side and the fairing slot touch.
I found I had to trim the top and rear for best fit. At the top point - if you see the fairing plastic pushing out it needs some trimming.
Also watch two thirds the way down where the fin taper is widest.
Here's a good fit of the fin in the fairing slot.

Does the root of the fin go all the way to the body tube??
ReplyDeleteHi Lester,
DeleteYes, the root of the fin should rest on and glue to the lowest wrap on the body tube.
