Estes M.A.V. #7283, Finished

For a "Beginner" kit, this one has a lot of interesting features.
Lots of detail and enough assembly for a beginner to have a good feeling of accomplishment.
I installed the pre-assembled 18"parachute. Is that too large for a 12" tall rocket? Probably not - the fins could break on a hard landing.

  1. I cut a spill hole I'm the chute and it still took a long time decending when flown on a C. Some one already rooted breaking off the foot on landing so the chute with spill hole is the best option.

    1. Hi Anonymous,
I read about a leg being broken. I was going to change to a 12" chute but will go with a spill hole. Even at a 250" altitude on a C6 engine, there could be some drift with the 18" chute on a windy day.
Reminds me of the Apogee Lexx Jet with the kit provided 32" parachute. After ejection it stayed up too long, just hanging and drifting in the wind.

  2. The MAV is an interesting kit. I decided to customize mine. I used a heat gun to remove the launch guide, and added wooden strip to cover the holes, them added a launch lug. The body tube is getting some styrene details glued on, then the entire model will get primed and painted. Maybe white with either red or orange, like the Mars Lander.

    2. Chris, I will. I’m back in serious yard work mode and need to get back to the rocket room!
