Estes Lynx, Kit #7233, Build Part 3, Engine Mount

The engine vanes upper flat side will butt up against the centering ring. The centering rings sides are usually cut at an slight angle.
For a better fit, sand the sides of the rings flat.

The vanes are tiny and there is eight of them!
You really should sand off the laser cut hold down ticks.
Also, the laser cut sides are at an angle. Square them up!

In the inset picture -
Before sanding is on the left,
After sanding is on the right.

The fin sides are almost cut with a jagged line.

Sand square and clean them up.
The rear ring is glued on 1/2" from the end of the engine mount tube.
Check the length of the vanes, they are almost 1/16" less than that at 7/16" long.
I glued the rear ring 7/16" from the rear so the vanes would end up even with the end of the tube.

  1. Hi Chris,

Aren't the vanes supposed to be angled/bevelled in the back? Squaring them up shortens them by the 1/16".

    1. Hi Eric,
The vanes are angled in the back.
My sanding didn't shorten them, they were cut shorter than the 1/2" indicated in the instructions.
I square them up to get rid of the slight angle on the sides from the laser cutting. The vanes (or fins) won't stand up straight unless they are square.
When sanding the vanes I am also removing the laser cut soot from the sides. The little bit I took down didn't shorten the vane length by much, if any. They were already 1/16" short if the rear centering ring was glued at 1/2" from the rear.
Jeffy Jeep (on YORF) did a build of the Lynx and also found the vanes to be too short.

    2. OK. I didn't know. I've been enjoying your blog for a while now as I haven't as much time to build. Thanks for putting it up! - Eric
