I haven't done a long drive since the early 1980s. I would drive alone from California to Florida in three days, averaging 1,000 miles a day!
I'm older now, I gave myself a four day travel window.
I left Orlando on Tuesday about 8 a.m. I arrived in Pueblo, Colorado Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
1,800 miles in 36 hours - not bad! It is a long haul though.
I'll be sharing a room at the Comfort Inn with Doug Frost, he's not going to be here until Friday. I got a room at the Motel 6 for the next two nights.
Hey, Chris, Welcome to Colorado !!! Glad you made it here safely. I greatly look forward to meeting you in person on Saturday nite.
ReplyDeleteA couple quick tips for you on your flying days: The Arkansas Valley can get HOT and dry. Make sure you've got a good wide brim hat, some shade, plenty of sun screen, and LOTS of cold water.
ReplyDeleteAnother important tip: when you are out on rocket recovery, be aware that we do have rattle snakes here on the plains. If you encounter one, you'll definitely hear the rattling sound and see it in 'strike' coil. Just give it a wide berth. They don't chase anybody.
Also be aware that there are likely small patches of low growing cactus on the field. Those spines can be nasty!
Good luck in the competition, and sport flying.
Thanks for the tips Ed,
DeleteThis morning I was already shopping for some decent, higher boots. I have a cooler and will buy some water. Florida has the most miserable weather conditions, I was hoping Colorado will be easier. I'm looking forward to meeting everybody through the week!
Hi, Chris,
ReplyDeleteMe again.
I checked my favorite, very reliable wind/weather website and it has a recording station at East Pueblo.
Looks like temps will be in the hi 70s to lo 80s throughout the week. Sunny, clear skies every day of the meet. Wind speeds between 5-13 mph the entire week with no predicted daytime gusts exceeding 15mph! This is fantastic, ideal Colorado flying weather! You're definitely in for a major treat. Take advantage and get a lot of flying in. You will also notice that, because of the altitude and thinner air density here, your models will fly noticeably higher than they would in Florida. Geez, I wish I could come down and do some flying.....anyway, have fun!
Ooops! Meant to say lo 90's on the temps....
ReplyDeleteWish the NARAMs would come to Florida some day. They are always at the Canadian border or west of the mighty Mississippi ! The weather is not any cooler there this year.
