Bad Paint - AGAIN!

I'm never going to recommend a brand of paint again.

I started having troubles with Rusto 2X Gloss White a while back. Occasionally it would shoot out a rough splatter or what I called "cottage cheese". Luckily it sanded down easily.

I switched over to Rusto High Performance enamel in the silver can. For a while things were going well. The paint went on smooth and dried with a good gloss - until today. It spattered and left a rough coat.
The picture above shows a rough coat on some scrap cardboard. This was after I heard the spray "hiss" change. I tried to clear the bad goop on some scrap cardboard to resume smooth painting. It took over 10 sprays to clear the rough spray.

I'll start looking for another gloss white paint. Maybe Duplicolor?
Duplicolor car paint sprays on smooth but in humid weather it doesn't seem to dry as glossy.

  1. This has been my goto paint recently. It has been a good paint for the reasons you mention, but I find the finish takes very long to dry and is kinda soft (scratches and dents). I have not had any spatter problems. Was it a new can? Lately I have been cleaning the nozzles with lacquer thinner between use. That said all rattle cans have their reoccurring problems. I've thought about trying airbrush, but don't have the time for equipment maintenance. Good luck!

  2. Have you tried the Krylon Acryli-Quik? Folks who've tried it seem to be extremely happy with it.

I haven't found a good way to purchase it yet for myself. Also it is certainly more expensive than the Rusto.

But if it's reliable and quick-drying... could be a good option.

    1. Hi Neil,
I'm probably going to order some Krylon Acryli-Quik from Graingers. I'm growing tired of the spray paint inconsistency.

  3. I know it gets a lot of haters, but I like Krylon Color Master, or Dual (I can't really tell a difference, so I grab whatever's in the store). Their gloss white and gloss sun yellow (bright yellow, not pale like the Rusto sun yellow) always come out great for me.

    1. I like the Krylon as well. It seems to behave more like a lacquer. Dries quick and good colors. The only negative is that it never achieves a good gloss like Rusto.

    2. I actually get much shinier results with the Krylon than I've gotten with Rusto. If I could post pictures here, I would.

Some Rusto colors I love, though. Apple Red and Dark Gray are awesome. I like the black, but lately I've gotten a lot more orange peel. And when the straw's not clogged, the Marigold is a beautiful warm yellow.

    3. Hi Daniel,
The Rusto 2X gloss black and gloss red can dry a little rough with occasional raised blobs.

  4. Funny...I came over here today to see if you have had any good luck with white spray paint lately. I'm so sorry for your trouble. I'm going to try Duplicolor and if I get desparate enough to spend $$$ on a can of paint, the Krylon Acryli-Quik that I can order from McMaster Carr. It's the old formula Krylon.

    1. Hi Wolfram,
I just may have to buy some gloss white Krylon Industrial Acryli-Quick in bulk!

  5. This morning I thought, why doesn't he just ditch the cans and start using an airbrush? Then, why don't I just ditch the cans and start using an airbrush?

    1. Hi Wolfram,
If I buy an airbrush I'll have to build some sort of painting booth with fan. I guess I'm tired of having to learn new things!
I wanted to blog methods to reflect what 98% of how the home hobbyist would be building and painting their rockets.
