Estes Starship Nova #1371 Build, Part 11, Intake End Form Gluing

The gluing area on the intake was scraped for better adhesion.
Notice to the left a scraped line for the ends of the intake form.

Slightly wider intake ends were traced and cut from 110 lb. stock.

A glue stick was used for most of the gluing onto the intake end. The bottom edges were glued down using wood glue.

To harden up the card stock, medium CA was wiped over the outside of the intake form.

After drying it was polished smooth with 400 grit sandpaper.

Here's the finished look with full closure of the ends against the body tube.

  1. Hmm, is there an obvious reason why the intake tube ends were not simply cut to that shape in the first place using a template?

    1. Hi Neil,
I thought the same thing when I was cutting it out. Maybe the designer liked the layering. The engine pods have an added shroud.

    2. Yeah, maybe so. Will be interesting to see at the end if the layering effect is actually visible.

    3. Perhaps it has something to do with making it easier to get the bulkhead pieces aligned and glued into the right place? For the belly "intake" part the reinforcing bulkheads would need to change from those glued to the ends of the tube to those that you'd glue to the inside of the tube, inset from the ends. Being shaped like "C" the piece would likely twist slightly and the ends of the "C" are likely to not be aligned unless you're very careful.
The "engine pod" bit might be easier. The front bulkhead piece would need to be glued slightly inset from the front edge (to allow for the "wave" cut) -- and to assure you'd be getting everything aligned correctly, you'd probably want to cut the "wavy" edge after you've glued the bulkhead pieces.

    4. Hi Neil,
The layering effect will be visible, orange decals go on the ends. They are shaped jut like the card stock fairings.

    5. Hi Naoto,
You are right, the lower intake has the ring glued on the end of the tube, the engine pods have the rings glued inside and flush with the end of the tube halves. While the instructions don't illustrate it well but it is obvious when you set the rings over the tube ends.
Cutting the wavy edge is best done before gluing the card stock onto the engine pod. It would be hard to reach the inside curve afterwards.
