Estes Kit Balsa Thickness?

I was doing some research into some old Estes Design of the Month builds.
Occasionally you run into a confusing part catalog number. Today it was fin stock thickness.

Like the Estes body tubes - a BT-20, 50, 55, 60 or 80 tells you nothing about the outside diameter. In older catalogs, the fin stock catalog numbers don't tell you the sheet thickness.

Here's the breakdown:
BFS - 10 = 1/32" thick balsa
BFS - 20 = 1/16" thick
BFS - 30 = 3/32" thick (The majority of Estes kits now contain 3/32" thick balsa)
BFS - 40 = 1/8" thick

  1. An easy way to remember the thickness of balsa, as designated by Estes, is that the first number is the thickness in units of 1/32”. So BFS-10 is 1/32”, BFS-20 is 2/32” (1/16”), BFS-30 is 3/32”, and BFS-40 is 4/32” (1/8”).

    1. Hi Lee,
I never noticed that until reading your response! Sometimes the solution is simpler than you might think.
