Mini Mosquito Build Part 3, Primer, Undercoat and Mask

The gray primer filler has been sprayed and sanded down.
You can still see a little of the nose cone / body tube joint.

A white undercoat followed then wet sanding with 400 grit.

Two coats of Rusto 2X yellow followed.

Here's the paint mask to match the face card.

The black is on one fin, opposite the launch lug side.
The black extends down over the fillet and halfway between the two yellow fins.

  1. After the Rusto 2x fully dried, did you apply an acrylic clear coat or a different protective finish?
    Thanks,

  2. Hi Matt,
No, I rarely apply a overall spray of clear on models anymore.
Many builders will spray a coat of paint over the masking tape to "seal" the edges (before the second color coat) but I never found that to be needed.
I don't use Future over the entire model, just on the applied decals.
A Q-tip is dipped into the Future and the excess is wiped off. Then that very thin coat of Future is brushed on the decal only, being sure to seal the edges.
For a while I was spraying clear coats on finished models but they would get sticky when outside in the Florida humidity.

  3. Thank you, I appreciate you taking time to respond. That information is very helpful. It sounds like the Future is applied only to protect the decals from shearing or separating from the model during flight, but coating the entire rocket in Future would introduce that sticky/humidity issue.

  4. So did you use a gray sandable primer and then a white sandable primer, prior to the Rusto 2X yellow?

What were all three paints used on this build and why use grey primer then white, and not just white 2X?

    Thanks!

    Scott.

  5. Hi Scott,
I use Duplicolor Primer/Filler, not a primer you find at a hardware store. You can get it at auto supply stores.
I've tried other gray primers but the Duplicolor Primer/Filler is easier to sand.
Afte the gray primer/filler, I use a gloss white undercoat, usually the Rusto 2X and then the final color. I don't use white primers.
You should always use a white undercoat, especially when your finish color is light.
