Bill Simon and Alphas at the Seattle Museum Of Flight

On the NAR Facebook page, Dan French posted some pictures of Bill Simon at the Seattle Museum of Flight: CLICK HERE

For all the true rocket nerds, here's a few pictures showing the changes the kit has gone through over the years. Enlarge for easier reading -

The white lines on the engine mounts are elastic holding them down on the display board.

  1. Gee, Chris....thanks for publicizing my little display boxes about Alpha evolution. I made these for Dan and his display. I was busy in another part of the Museum with groups of kids building Alphas (and with the Alpha’s designer, Bill Simon, tossing in a thought or three along the way and helping with the builds).

Yes, that’s elastic holding in the motor mounts. I didn’t want to glue especially the third engine mount from the top down as that is the only example of the adapter ring I have that’s not green. It’s from a kit from 1990 that had a red Alpha III nose cone in it. And thereby hangs another tale......

Speaking of nose cones - there are four in the picture mostly for symmetry. The only difference between the lower two is the country of origin. The shape, to my eye, at least, is the same. I left out the 1989-1992 period where one might have gotten an Alpha III nose cone in an Alpha kit mainly to not confuse the display too much. At the moment I have no idea how numerous the Alpha III cones were compared to the white blow-molded nose cones (earlier shape).
