Mini Honest John Build Part 16 Nose Cone Mask

To really get a grasp of how to mask a nose cone, go to the Apogee Peak Of Flight newsletter HERE
I wrote an article in much more detail on how to do a nose cone mask.
The article shows a simple one color mask around the perimeter of a nose cone.

This mask is much more complicated, there are four different colors.
From the tip down - Light Grey to 1.37".
Olive Drab from 1.37" to 4.24"
Black from 4.24" to 4.88".
White from 4.88 to the shoulder.

Usually, I'll try to paint the nose cone from the lightest color to the darkest.
The white has already been applied.
I'd like to paint the next darkest color - the grey tip. But, for easier masking it might be easier to paint the Olive Drab to the tip first.

I printed out a narrow transition pattern at www.payloadbay.com.
The shroud tool is on the tools page.
The lowest diameter for the Olive Drab color is 1.25" diameter.
That was entered into the transition tool with 1.35" for the wider diameter.
The transition is only 1/2" wide. In the end, the tape mask will be cut less than 1/4" wide.

Refer to the Apogee Peak Of Flight article to see how to cut the curved mask using a glass patio door and direct sunlight.

The blackened edge was set down just below the recessed ridge at the widest point of the nose cone.
Masking tape and a cut up grocery bag was taped below that.

After burnishing the tape, the upper half of the nose cone was sprayed with Testor's Master Modeler Olive Drab.

In the picture the tape is being pulled off showing the edge.
