This is the Semroc Hawk, based on the 1965 AMROCS kit, designed by Larry Renger.
Larry Renger also designed the similar Estes Falcon boost glider.
I flew this one twice both on 1/2A6-2 engines.
The first flight was okay, not a long duration glide.
Clay weight was added and it was prepped for another flight.
The second flight boost broke the body just forward of the tail section. You can see the dowels glued on to reinforce the joint.
The underside was hit with a wide point permanent marker for visibility.
Interesting. Thanks for posting that. I cloned one of these early on in my hobby and thought it needed a lot of tail weight. Looks similar to mine.
ReplyDeleteHuge Blues.
I'm doing this build and really like the decal you added. Would that be something you still have on hand and could be made available?
ReplyDeleteFor this build, I was also referencing your rocket reviews post (http://www.rocketreviews.com/semroc-astronautics-corporation-hawk--by-hans-quotchrisquot-michielssen.html) and the new Rocket noob's weight of paint posts to see if it's worth painting with the orange and black color scheme or sticking to semi nude like you've done - which I do like.
Hi Scott,
DeleteThat decal came with the Semroc kit. I don't have it available. I would keep it light, not much paint. Fly it the first few times with the smallest engine you have. That black color was from a wide point Sharpie style marker which adds very little weight, if any. It' helps to have some dark coloring on the under side so you can see it against the sky.
I emailed Semroc and got this response from Randy Boadway.
ReplyDeleteHi Scott,
Early on in the life of the Hawk the decal was eliminated. The bird is not very stable when painted with heavy paint. The decal would have encouraged painting of the bird. We do still have 10 decals left in stock if you would like to purchase one. Semroc Decal - Hawk SEM-DKV-65 *
Well they now have 9 decals, as I just got one. I do like the look and the method you used to color and paint the Semroc Hawk.
