New Estes Kit?

I don't know what this is . . .
When you go to the Estes website and look at the Upcoming Nike Smoke kit, this comes up as the parts picture. CLICK HERE and go to "Additional Images".

That is a Honest John nose cone. I don't recognize all those centering rings. The name decal looks like the atomic symbol and the word "Express", but I can't be sure. Somehow this picture got slipped in the Nike Smoke kit description.
Anybody have a clue as to what is is (or was?)

  1. Hmmm...from all the centering rings and - possibly? - paper shrouds, plus the neo-retro decals I'm guessing some kind of 1950s-ish sci-fi rocket ship? John Boren dropped some hints on one of the forums about more space-ship style models coming from Estes.

  2. That is a mighty interesting collection of parts. Weird centering rings.... overlong engine tube... curvy decals... paper shrouds with alignment marks... I'm confused there's so little balsa, though.

Could make a good contest, to guess what that thing is going to look like when built.

  3. There aren't any couplers. So parts are missing, right?

    1. I dunno, given the looks of all those centering rings it's not clear that any couplers would be needed.

  4. The BT-50 tube (4th from top) can be used as a coupler with the three 50-55 centering rings (upper right corner of sheet) to connect two BT-55 tubes (2nd and 3rd from top).

However, it looks like the nosecone fits the BT-50.

    Hmmmmm.

  5. Imagine the confusion you'd have if these were indeed the parts included in the Nike Smoke kit...
I've had a few occasions where I'd picked up a plastic model kit where the contents were mispacked. On a few occasions I'd ended up with the contents of the box was for one kit, and the contents within were for a different kit. On another occasion I got an extra sprue tree for a different (unrelated) model kit. And yet another occasion where the box, sprue trees, instructions and decal sheet that were all mismatched. And in each of these cases -- the box was taped closed with a factory seal (so the goof-up was likely by the manufacturer).
