Quest Cobalt Build Part 4 Step 7 Fin Marking OOPS!
Step 7 has you cut out the tube marking guide.
As normal, wrap it around the tube and mark for the fins.
I don't like cutting up instructions, I transferred the lines onto another piece of paper and cut out the guide.
It was wrapped around the 40mm tube.
IT FIDN'T DIT!
(If you got that, you've heard of Rindercella.)
Sorry, It didn't fit!
The marking guide was short by about 1/2" inch.
I ended up making my own marking guide.

Kinda makes me wonder if the manufacturers of the kits ever read these blogs to find their mistakes.
ReplyDeleteHi Lester,
ReplyDeleteI don't know if the manufacturers read the blogs or not.
In printing, it's easy to make mistakes. I worked for years as a graphic artist and made mistakes that were found only after thousands of copies were made!
The new Quest instructions are beautifully done. It looks like a master "template" was used for consistency throughout the product line. I would guess that new illustrations and copy were plugged into a master "template". The template looked complete but probably had a marking guide from a previous 30mm model instruction sheet. Just a guess!
I've seen mistakes in old instructions (Estes Thor Agena B) and in recent kits where the engine mount was to be glued in after the TTW fins were glued on!
Done well, drawing and setting up rocket kit instructions are time consuming and expensive! But, stuff happens! That's where an adendum (small additional correction page) should be included.
Yeah.. I emailed Quest on that and gave them my 2 cents. I was building mine one evening with my 7 year old nephew. All was well until I had to spend 15 mins in Adobe Illustrator with a calculator to make my own fin guide. That was it.. he lost interest... ugh.. If it was an Estes size tube I have plenty of fin guides laying around. Quest didn't answer my question on why they didn't have an addendum, but they did apologize and gave me a 40% discount coupon!
ReplyDeleteHi Jerome,
ReplyDeleteKit supplied fin marking guides are off more than you'd expect. I usually make mine by wrapping a strip of paper around the body tube and marking the overlap. Fold in half, then fold in half again and you have a four fin guide.
A 40% off coupon is a pretty good compromise for your trouble.
