Launch! Orlando R.O.C.K., December 1, 2018

We were expecting wind and rain so smaller draggy rockets with streamers were prepped. As it ended up, there was just a few sprinkles and 5 mph winds.

The FLYING ENGINE MOUNT was launched with an Estes A10-3t engine. This  was the engine mount left over  from the Curvilinear 18mm engine conversion. No launch lug, just two holes punched in the centering rings. Very draggy and stable to 100 feet.

The Hot Rod Rockets BELL BOTTOM flew with an Estes A3-4t. This was the 22nd launch to an estimated 250'. Streamer recovery.

The Quest X-15 was next with a Quest Chinese B6-4. Estimated altitude was 275'. A spill holed chute brought it back with no damage. This was the 16th launch of the X-15 going back to 2014.

The Estes MINI A HELI got a 42 second duration with an Estes A10-3t. Not as good a time as it got at NARAM. Thanks to Lonnie for timing it.
There was some crimping on the BT-5 body tube so I wasn't worried about losing it. I told Tom if he found it he could keep it. He did make the long walk, picked it up and gave it to some new rocketeers.

Next to the Mini A Heli is Jim Little's Spaceman in "Gort" decor.
The New Way FIRECAT 4 went up with a Quest German B6-4. Arrow straight boost with no turns. I tried a combination of streamer and a taped shut parachute. Probably not a good idea, it spun and made a tangled mess.
When I picked it up I noticed one of the upturned fins had torn off. A dent in the nose cone assembly told me it was hit from a snap-back ejection. The fin wasn't found anywhere near the landing area.
Estimated altitude was 300'.

Roger and Bracha Smith launched the original version of the Super Big Bertha with a D12-5 engine. I thought the delay might be too long but with the upper winds it was a perfect choice.
Last for me was a rocket I always keep handy in my range box.
The Quest VIPER flew with an Estes A8-3 to 300'.
This build got the fins clipped and the fin can flipped over. A new streamer brought it back close.
Also flown - Art Applewhite MONOCOPTER with an A10-3t engine.

Seven launches, one lost fin - a good day considering we thought we might be rained out.

  1. This launch was a good way to end the 2018 flying season. I was able to continue firing Q-jet motors from Quest. It appears that they have the delay and the ejection charges right. I also noted the the newest batch of Estes motors may be burning a purer fuel mixture based the 3" diameter Pringle's Can tube rockets I fly.

    1. Hi Manuel,
It was a good way to finish launching for 2018. Your Pringles can rockets were a great match for the Q-Jets.
