Tools - The Essentials, Aluminum Angle

Here's how the old instructions would have you mark a body tube fin locations. Set the tube into a door frame and draw a straight line with a pencil.
For ease and more accuracy, buy an aluminum angle. This one is 3/4" on one side.

They are sold 36" long. cut it into two 18" lengths.

I've used an aluminum angle like this to mark BT-5s all the way up to the 4" diameter Saturn V tube.

TIP: You can also check the alignment of launch lugs if the lug is glued on before the fins.

  1. Do you mean BT-55 upto 4" tubes. I have to use a 1/2"x1/2" angle to mark BT-20 and below. BT-5 is even a little small for a 1/2" angle. Maybe I don't know the right technique.

    1. Hi Eero,
I do use the 3/4" side angle on BT-5 tubes. The BT-5 sets in below the edge of the angle. You just have to angle the pencil and keep that angle consistent while drawing the line on the tube.
