On my last Alaska cruise the ship stopped in Kodiak, Alaska.
A brochure in the visitors center caught my eye.

The map shows the location of the facility near the Narrow Cape at the lower center.

I was told the launch complex was initially built to launch Star Wars defense drones. Now the military does satellite launches there.

At first, locals weren't very interested in having the launch complex built on the island. But, they warmed up to the idea when they found out there would be new roads built to accommodate transporting the payloads.
