Semroc (Estes) Starship Excalibur Build, Part 25, White Coats, More Sanding

You know how frustrating it is.
You think your surfaces are smooth and your fillets well rounded. The grey primer coats show things and you end up with more  sanding.

Now the white coats come. I thought I'd be finished with this one by now!

The more details, the more finishing problems.

There are still some areas that will need smooth sanding.
This build has slowed me up! I usually do blog posts in draft form two weeks in advance. I'm falling behind on this one!

  1. Speaking of painting frustrations -- especially if you do your painting outside... gnats -- in swarms.

    1. Hi Naoto,
I'm lucky in that regard. I live in a townhouse and my unit is surrounded. I spray in my patio and rarely have small bugs near the paint. (Not to say it hasn't happened-)

  2. Paint has been getting me down lately too; especially white. I've been trying to finish a Sprint upscale and have painted and sanded it off at least three times now. Blemishes the first time. Gnats/bugs and blotchy paint. And then "the krinkles." I'm about fed up with Rustoleum's white antics (the colors don't seem to have the problems). I've hated Krylon for decades. I'm thinking of trying Duplicolor lacquer, for white at least, though I hate to mix types and even brands.

    1. Hi Tim,
I think Rustoleum has changed its formula again. The gloss white was okay for a long while but not anymore! You're right, the other colors don't have as many problems.
You should be okay spraying enamels over lacquer, but don't spray lacquer over enamel. But you probably already knew that.

  3. Speaking of lacquers -- you need to be vary careful with the type used for R/C car bodies (they're made to adhere to Lexan, so they're rather "hot" chemically - enough to melt styrene and other plastics).
