Quest Q-Jets Engines Introduced at NARCON

From a February 25 Rocketry Forum post by Mr. G:

"Here is a sneak peek on the coming single use composite A-D motors from Aerotech/Quest.

Gary said two had been certified but they won't release anything until all have completed testing. The propellent for all is Black Jack or Black Max to be confirmed with more news after the NARCON Manufacturers Presentations at 5pm ET today."

  1. My least favorite propellant, but I guess they wanted it to look like a BP motor going up? If they beat their BP counterparts in total impulse and thrust, I am sure I will use them anyway. I was hoping for White Lightning, but you can't have everything.

    1. Hi Metal,
That might be their reasoning. It might also be that the formulation is the least expensive to package in an affordable 18mm engine. Estes BP engines have gone up and up in price. Now a composite propellant 18mm could be close to the same price.

  2. These are pretty low impulse. Seems more appropriate for boost gliders.

    1. Hi Lee,
Quest/Aerotech only showed the A3-4 composite at NARCON. We'll have to wait and see the thrust curves when the certification testing is complete. They will also have B, C and D engines in a 18mm casing.

    1. Hi Aardvark,
As I understand it, the engines were NAR certified and ready to go into production. Then the supplier of the casings backed out. Quest had to find another domestic supplier and those engines re-tested.

    1. Hi Unknown,
You're right! It might be the same package as the First Fire Minis, too.
