Estes V2 Build Part 3 Engine Mount Prep

In these first three pictures I'm still doing a dry fit of the centering rings, no glue.

If you look inside the tail cone at the 2:30 position you'll see a raised mold seam.

That raised area is impeding the fit of the smaller centering ring against the inside wall.
There's another raised seam directly on the other side, too.

To level the raised seam, some 100 grit sandpaper was taped around an expended engine casing. The open end of the casing was slipper ever a 1/2' dowel.

It took quite a few passes of the sandpaper to level out the mold seam.
It was worth it, the ring now has a better fit against all inside walls, all the way around.

With all the dry fits, I found the 6" centering ring position to be correct.

The lowest small ring was a different story.
The instructions have you glue it 3/8" from the end. That's the pencil mark under the engine hook.

After dry fitting against the inside wall, my ring had to be moved up to the position shown, about 1/16" above the 3/8" mark.

Even without sanding down the raised seam, the 3/8" small ring position wouldn't work.

This is the completed mount.
I did cut the finger tab off the engine hook.

  1. Thank you for this editorial. The instructions in my kit are piss poor and this has been very helpful to me.
